QUESTIONS & ANSWERS:

Mixin Mingle: What’s a “Dreamy New Year” and why do we want one?

Toni McLellan: Personally, I love the turning of the page on the calendar; there’s something really gratifying about closing out a year and looking forward to the next one. The holidays can be a really stressful and/or busy time for weeks on end and then: Poof! They’re over and we’re left with a bunch of cold and grey winter days.

Looking at the coming year gives us a chance to reset and begin again. I like the idea of setting goals that nudge us closer to our dreams, so that’s why I came up with the idea of the Dreamy New Year workshop. It’s always nice to have something to look forward to.

MM: Is this workshop about setting New Year’s resolutions?

TM: Not in the way we usually think of them. We all get excited in January and make these epic plans, and then something happens. It’s called February. All that enthusiasm falls away and we find ourselves repeating the same old patterns again.

As a life coach, I’ve studied habit change and also paid close attention not just to what makes successful people tick, but *happy* successful people. What keeps them going in the face of inevitable obstacles? What’s the difference between a goal we stick with and one we let fall away? And I have some great ideas based on my research and personal experience that I’d love to share in this workshop.

MM: What will people do during the workshop?

TM: Learn how to set goals that excite you instead of feeling like an overwhelming mound of “shoulds.” We’ll also explore choosing a theme for 2014 as a sort of guiding principle, which is a lot of fun. And I’ll share a couple of journaling techniques I use to keep momentum throughout the year.

Finally, we’ll create a vision board, which is a visual representation of the good stuff you’d like to invite into your life. I love seeing people get into the zone with their scissors and glue sticks, and an hour or so later, they’re holding up this beautiful, colorful, fun representation of their hopes and dreams.

I think that we often get so caught up in the everyday that we forget how important fun is to our existence; it’s a totally underrated value, and I love helping people see that through work-that-feels-like-play like this.

MM: Anything else people should know?

TM: Glue, scissors, and poster board will be provided, along with my ever-growing supply of magazines and catalogs. I strongly encourage people to bring their own magazine or catalog stash to this workshop, because nothing lights you up like the stuff that makes you happy to see each month when that favorite publication arrives. Also, be ready to let your creative side out to play and see what shows up when you open up to all of the good stuff you’d like in your life in 2014.
